Diver underwater holding a Spare Air backup unit

Why we invented Spare Air

One more breath.
A whole new idea.

After surviving an out-of-air emergency on a night dive, our founder Larry Williamson set out to create a compact, independent source of backup air. Spare Air made its trade-show debut in 1979.

That original idea still drives us: a self-contained cylinder and regulator, separate from a diver’s main tank. We manufacture Spare Air in Huntington Beach, California, and support the equipment we build.

“I have carried a SPARE AIR with me as standard equipment for two years, but this is the first time I have had to use it in an emergency situation.”

“I made a very easy decision, I gave the second diver my primary regulator and I took out my SPARE AIR.”

A few things to know.

Does Spare Air connect to my main tank?

Spare Air has its own cylinder and regulator. It is an independent backup air source, separate from your main SCUBA system.

Does twice the capacity mean twice the dive time?

Capacity is a cylinder specification. Breathing duration varies with depth, breathing rate, exertion, and fill pressure. Use Spare Air as emergency backup equipment and follow its operating instructions.

How do I refill it?

Use a compatible adapter and a suitable breathing-air source at the pressure specified for your model. See our refilling guide and select the correct connection before ordering.
