Storage & Maintenance Best Practices
✓ Store Pressurized
Always store Spare Air full or with positive pressure to prevent contaminants from entering the cylinder. Check pressure monthly and top off as needed.
✓ Rinse After Every Use
Thoroughly rinse with fresh water after saltwater, pool chemicals, or any contaminated water exposure. Pay special attention to the regulator threads and check valve.
✓ Annual VIP Inspection
Have your Spare Air visually inspected annually by a qualified technician, just like your SCUBA tanks. This ensures internal cleanliness and component integrity.
✓ Hydrostatic Testing
DOT regulations require hydrostatic testing every 5 years. Mark your calendar and never dive with an out-of-date cylinder.
✓ Temperature Control
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Optimal storage temperature is 50-75°F (10-24°C). Avoid car trunks and hot garages.
✓ Replace Air Annually
Industry guidelines recommend replacing air in cylinders annually, even if unused. Old air can develop moisture and contaminants.
⚠️ What NOT to Do with Spare Air
Understanding the limitations and proper use of Spare Air is just as important as knowing its capabilities. Here are critical safety warnings:
❌ DO NOT Use as Primary Air Source
Why: Spare Air is designed as an emergency backup only. It does not contain enough air for a full dive. Always dive with an appropriately sized primary tank for your planned dive profile.
❌ DO NOT Exceed Recreational Depth Limits
Why: Air consumption increases dramatically with depth. Spare Air is designed for recreational depths (typically 60-100 feet maximum). Technical or deep diving requires redundant primary systems, not Spare Air.
❌ DO NOT Use Automotive or Shop Compressors
Why: Only breathing-air quality compressors are safe. Automotive compressors contain oil, carbon monoxide, and other contaminants that are toxic when breathed. Use only SCUBA compressors, dive shops, or the Nomad III breathing air compressor.
❌ DO NOT Hold Your Breath While Ascending
Why: Expanding air in your lungs during ascent can cause pulmonary barotrauma (lung overexpansion injury), arterial gas embolism, or death. Always exhale continuously during ascent, even if your air runs out.
❌ DO NOT Use Hydrocarbon-Based Lubricants
Why: Petroleum-based oils, WD-40, or automotive greases can ignite or explode when exposed to high-pressure oxygen. Use only silicone-based lubricants designed for SCUBA equipment.
❌ DO NOT Force Stuck Regulators
Why: Using tools or excessive force can strip threads, crack the cylinder neck, or damage the regulator. If stuck, soak in 1:1 vinegar and water solution overnight to dissolve salt corrosion.
❌ DO NOT Dive with Empty or Low-Pressure Spare Air
Why: An empty or partially filled Spare Air provides false security. Always check your pressure indicator before every dive and refill to 3000 PSI.
❌ DO NOT Skip Annual Inspections
Why: Internal corrosion, moisture contamination, or component wear can compromise safety. Annual VIP inspections and 5-year hydrostatic tests are required by DOT regulations and critical for safety.
❌ DO NOT Modify or Tamper with Components
Why: Spare Air is a precision life-support device. Modifications, unauthorized repairs, or component substitutions can cause catastrophic failure. Only qualified technicians should service internal components.
❌ DO NOT Store Empty or in Extreme Temperatures
Why: Empty cylinders allow moisture and contaminants to enter. Extreme heat (above 120°F/49°C) can damage seals and O-rings. Extreme cold can affect regulator performance and air density.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Spare Air for activities other than SCUBA diving?
Yes! As demonstrated by our customers, Spare Air is versatile for boat maintenance, pool repairs, shallow water recovery, emergency fire escape, and even aviation safety. However, it should always be used within its design limitations and never as a substitute for proper safety equipment specific to each activity.
How long will Spare Air last in non-diving applications?
Air duration depends on depth, breathing rate, and activity level. At the surface, a 3.0 cu ft Spare Air provides approximately 57 breaths. For shallow pool work or surface activities, this can extend to several minutes of working time. Always plan conservatively and surface with reserve air.
Can I use Spare Air in contaminated or toxic environments?
Spare Air provides clean breathing air in smoke, toxic fumes, or contaminated atmospheres for emergency escape only. It is NOT designed for extended work in hazardous environments—that requires SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) with larger capacity and full face protection.
Is Spare Air suitable for ice diving or cold water?
Spare Air can be used in cold water, but regulators can freeze in water below 50°F (10°C). If diving in cold conditions, have your regulator serviced with cold-water compatible components and lubricants. Never use Spare Air as your only backup in overhead environments like ice diving.
Can I lend my Spare Air to someone who isn't certified?
Spare Air should only be used by individuals who understand basic SCUBA principles, including the critical rule of never holding your breath during ascent. For non-divers in emergency situations (boat crew, passengers), provide brief instruction on continuous breathing and ascent procedures.
How do I clean Spare Air after pool chemical exposure?
Rinse thoroughly with fresh water immediately after exposure to chlorine or other pool chemicals. Pay special attention to the regulator, check valve, and all metal surfaces. Dry completely before storage. Consider having the unit professionally serviced if regularly exposed to chemicals.
Can I use Spare Air for commercial or professional work?
Spare Air is designed for recreational use and emergency backup. Commercial diving, underwater construction, or professional applications typically require redundant primary systems, surface-supplied air, or commercial-grade equipment that meets specific industry regulations.
What's the difference between Spare Air and HEED 3?
